Project manager, vice-rector for development of the Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory, Head of the Department of music pedagogy and performance, Ph.D., professor Olga Krasnogorova gives more details concerning the International music Olympiad
-Olga, please tell us how the idea of the Olympiad appeared and what aims were set by the organizers?
-In the last few years All-Russian Olympiad of musical college students in four subjects: "orchestral string instruments", "orchestral folk instruments", " academic choir conducting ", "musicology" has been regularly held by the Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory. This year, our newly established Department of music education and performance has taken part in this Olympiad because we saw how interesting the contest format works with promising students, how much it affects the improvement of preparation quality. Thus, in March 2016 “All-Russian Olympiad on music pedagogy and performance" (piano) was held for the first time. But since our Department trains many foreign students and trainees (86 students), we pay serious attention to finding the most gifted students abroad. In this context, the idea is to project the experience of the All-Russian Olympiad to the international format. So actually the idea of the international music Olympiad emerged.
-It is known that in the world and in Russia in particular a large number of performing competitions are held. In what way is this Olympiad fundamentally different from them?
-Yes, indeed, the number of competitions is really huge. But, now we are not speaking about commercial competitions. If you dwell on serious professional competitions, the main aim of participation for a musician in them is to create opportunities for touring activities, attracting attention of concert managers and recording companies. The aim of the Olympiad is quite different. The most important thing is to create opportunities for training professionally gifted young musicians. There is a so-called quota for education of foreign citizens, that is, students can obtain state support for their learning (foreign students to study in Russia and Russian students abroad). Music education is a creative process. It is not enough to see the diploma of a student concerning the previous level of education, it is important to assess his or her creative ability and development potential. And in our opinion, international music Olympiad creates a completely transparent mechanism of selecting students worthy of government support in one form or another.
-In the name of the Olympiad there is a word combination "musical pedagogy". How was this component realized?
-The Department of music education and performance currently focuses its professional efforts on training teachers both for the Russian Federation and for other countries. In educational process students have to master performing disciplines in complex and at the same time to study profoundly methods of professional disciplines: teaching, history and theory of performing arts, to prepare independently a scientific research. We believe that this approach is justified because, for example, for foreign students it provides a great opportunity of insight into the Russian system of training musicians. In the second round of the Olympiad-2016 applicants had to present a performing analysis of their program and to answer questions of the Commission. The next Olympiad will be held in three rounds and the third round will be devoted entirely to questions on the history of piano pedagogy and performing arts.
-How do you assess the level of the event and what are the future plans of the organizers?
-This event was preceded by extensive preliminary work. The students who participated in the first international music Olympiad were selected on the basis of auditions, educational exhibitions and workshops. The level of the participants was professionally quite strong and stable. We will continue. At the moment it was important for us to announce the importance and significance of this event.
I want to thank the Department of science and education of the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation for the support. We are also very grateful to our foreign colleagues from the People's Republic of China. Of course, we would like this initiative to be supported by foreign colleagues from other countries. Then international music Olympiad will be of the same standard as international Olympiads in mathematics, physics, computer science and other subjects. We welcome suggestions about cooperation!
